Fall is a good thinking season. A time to slow down, stop stuffing the calendar for a bit, and take stock in what really matters. That sentiment is certainly reflected in this issue.

Through the tableau of a tedious live show, and his wily command of prose, musician Jack M. Senff examines the duality of art and life, the power of music, and why we do anything at all creatively. Journalists Daniel Wanschura and Patrick Shea of Interlochen Public Radio inspect our role as part of the ecosystem, and explore the ethical line between mending our natural world and meddling with it, through a sampling of their new episodic podcast series. Yarrow Brown shines a bright light onto the current housing emergency, providing the alarming truths, the measured hope of progress, and the ways you can help through her organization Housing North.

Traverse City-based writer Jacob Wheeler, publisher of the Glen Arbor Sun, previews his new book about a young woman determined to help some of the most downtrodden and destitute citizens of Guatemala. In a personal essay, Julia Wheelock showcases the indefinable and intangible work of a postpartum doula, and rightfully scrutinizes the current treatment of new mothers. Finally, for our comic relief, Chad Kirchner tells the story of a few determined local funny people who find a creative way to hone their craft, and pursue their passion for improv comedy.
